Family:  Capparaceae

Chief Characters : 

1. Deciduous tree grows upto 15mts. height.

2. Trifoliate compound leaf, alternate phyllotaxy.

3. Light yellow coloured flowers.

4. Corymb inflorescence.

5.  Fruit- berry. 

Synonyms:

 Varana, Setu, Kumaraka, Tiktasaka.

Gana : 

Sushruta: Tiktavarga, Varunadi, Vata samshamana.

Ayurvedic Properties: 

Rasa -Tikta, Kashaya, Madhura, Katu;
Guna- Laghu, Ruksha;
Virya- Ushna and
Vipaka - Katu.

Pharmacological Actions: 

Kaphavatahara, Deepana, Pittala, Bhedana.

Indications: 

Ashmari, Vidradi, Gulma, Krimi, Gandamala,

Mutra kricchra, Vatarakta.

Therapeutic Uses:  


  1.  Calculus: Intake of decoction of varuna (root-bark) added with its paste, dissolves calculus. (V.M.) 
  2. Gandamala: Decoction of varuna root taken with honey destroys gandamala of chronic origin. (V.M.) 
  3. Abscess: Decoction of root of Varuna should be taken. It controls the unripe abscess. (Y.R.)

Parts Used: Bark.

Preparations & Dosage: Decoction 50-100 ml.

Specific Formulations:

 Varunadi taila, Varunadi ghrita, Kanchanara guggulu.

Research Studies: 

Some of the fraction of C. nurvala showed promising -anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities. -It. has been found to produce prolonged hypotension of gradual onset.
